I had to make a separate page for eating and drinking in Bangkok because there is just so much to cover.
You cannot come to Bangkok and not eat street food, it’s the best, I get happy just thinking of it, and the best part is most street food is actually pretty good. If it looks like street food trying to be a restaurant give it a miss. If they have western dishes on the menu also give it a miss.
**Disclaimer - a lot of these places are around Sukhumvit as this used to be my neighbourhood.
Khao Hom on Sukhumvit Soi 22 (Also known as the one with the AC.) Technically not street food as it has walls, doors and AC but very simple and super delicious Thai Food. My recommendations here are everything! Som Tum, Phad Siew Ew, Thai Omelet, Phad Kra Pow, any of the Larb… All the dishes have pictures too so it makes ordering easy. This was a lunch time favourite for my team and so I feel like that gives it an authenticity stamp.
On the Corner before Sukhumvit Soi 26 (Just after the 7/11). Also really good, but no specific menu. Had Kra Pow, Tom Yum Goong or Gai, Pork Salad. This is a good place to watch what other people are eating and then point and ask for the same. This place is packed out from about 11.30 so a little more manageable at 1.30pm
The Grand Ramen on Sukhumvit Soi 26 This was a special treat lunch day, bowls of Ramen as big as your head for USD 5. They also have Japanese chicken Curry and Gyoza, great for a rainy day.
Kenshin Isakaya Another popular lunch spot and sometimes after work dinner and drinks. Giant Asahi and super delicious Isakaya. If downstairs looks full there is usually additional seating upstairs.
Moo Ping on the corner just after Jasmin Mall on Sukhumvit Soi 23. The best $1 you will ever spend. Two sticks of sweet sticky pork and a little bag of sticky rice. Only available until about 9am but you cannot not have Moo Ping. Usually also available in the morning outside of 7/11 or on street corners - see the picture in the street food section.
Maha Chai Rd So aside from Jai Fey where you have to book about four months in advance, all street food on this street is delicious, there is pretty good Phad Thai, Mango Sticky Rice and lots in between.
Bo Lan So i have been to two of the Michelin starred restaurants in Bangkok, Bo Lan and Nahm. Nahm I probably wouldn’t make the effort to go again even if dinner is free. Bo Lan I have already gone back to. The location is super easy - right next to Thong Lo BTS station, the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and feels very rustic/authentic. The service is perfect, from start to finish attentive without being overbearing. The food is out of this world good, the amuse bouche alone is worth the trip. I can’t say enough good things so you should just go try it yourself. I heard they also opened up a simpler eatery close to China town, I haven’t been but a Chef friend of mine recommended it.
No Idea - A Gastro Pub…. Also on Sukhumvit Soi 22… No Idea is a Gem hidden on Soi 22. Really great pub food (The Steak Sandwich and Bangers and Mash are standout) and also an amazing and reasonably priced wine list. There have upstairs seating so don’t be put off if you walk through the door and the place is full, Big Dave the owner will find a seat for you.
Charcoal - Tandoor Restaurant If you’re in the mood for seriously good tandoor, naan and cocktails then Charcoal is definitely where you want to go. It’s inside the Fraser Suites hotel and you should definitely make a reservation before hand. The cocktails are also really good. After dinner you can go up to the roof top bar above 11 and have cocktails overlooking the whole of Sukhumvit.
La Monita There are two of these Mexican restaurants on Sukhumvit. One at Ploen Chit and one at Phrom Pong. I prefer the Ploen Chit branch as it feels a little more rustic and they have a hot sauce bar. The food at both however is fantastic, as are the margaritas. I’ve tried all of the tacos and would recommend them all! Start with tacos and nachos and then if you’re still hungry order more. The portion sizes are pretty decent.
Soul Food - Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 57 Great Thai food in a very cute setting and amazing cocktails. The food is very authentic but a little more up market than street food. Book ahead as there are only a few seats and they fill up quite quickly.
Supanniga Also great Thai food, a little further up the street than Soul Food. All the usual dishes, the portions are pretty big so I would recommend three dishes between two people. If you’re still hungry you can order more.
Charm Eatery Another of my favourites, fantastic regional Thai food, good cocktails and live music. Try the Three Amigos salad with picked onions and quail eggs, so stinky but delicious and you’ll end up ordering another plate.
Iron Fairy’s This is on most bar lists for Bangkok. Its dark, the cocktails are great, I randomly ate a burger here once and it was amazing too. Also thousands of pots of glitter everywhere!
Havana Social A great bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11, you enter through a phone box, Panama hats are handed out at the bar, great cocktails and live music and awesome DJ’s. A great late night spot.
The Rabbit Hole In my opinion the best cocktails in Bangkok, try the Mad Hatter. There is no sign outside, just a big wooden door so don’t be surprised if you walk past it.
Back Stage Another great Thonglor spot with fantastic cocktails and a very cool setting. There is also a hotel attached to it that looks like it might be worth a visit.
