Sabai Jai in Bangkok

Sabai Jai in Bangkok

Thailand has, in my opinion, the best food in Asia. Recently I was in a conversation where someone commented that they were bored of Thai food and had been eating Pad Thai and fried rice (!?!?) all week. So I wanted to share a few of my faves and where you can get them easily.

With regards to street food; It’s generally safe, usually it’s ice with the chilled fruit that can make people sick rather than meat or cooked food items. If you’re unsure or you pass somewhere that smells so good you can’t just walk past then pull up a seat and just point at what it is that you want.  In my experience you might get charged a few extra THB but not an excessive amount.

I recently was in a conversation where someone mentioned they were sick of Thai food having only eaten Pad Thai and fried rice for a week….. there is so much more to Thai food than Pad Thai - here are a few of my favourites.

Southern Thai Green Curry with Roti’s -

Southern curry’s are a little spicier and always make sure yo get the Roti’, buttery, light and perfect for scooping up curry. Yum!

SomTumThai.jpg

Som Tum

Fresh papaya salad with veggies and peanuts. It usually comes with dry shrimps or fermented crab but you can have it without. Be careful - this dish is highly addictive!

Pad Siew Ew.jpg

Pad siew Ew

Big fat rice noodles fried with vegetables, your choice of meat and egg. It comes with a tray of sugar, chilli flakes, fish sauce and salt - add everything.

Tom Yum GoongJPG

Tom Yum Gai or Goong

Super fragrant and delicious. You can have it with or without coconut milk, I prefer it without. The soup is full of galangal, chili, lemongrass and garlic. This Tom Yum Goon was from Sabai Jai in Bangkok.

Moo Ping.jpg

Moo Ping

BBQ pork which has a sweet sticky sauce and comes served with sticky rice. The best $1 you will ever spend.

Nam Tok MooJPG

Nam Tok Moo

A grilled pork salad, super fresh and spicy.

Khao Soi.jpg

Khao Soi

A delicious curry style dish with noodles and crispy wonton skins. Add pickled vegetables for an extra kick. Khao Soi is traditionally a northern dish and not to be missed if you visit Chiang Mai. This one was from Khao Soi Khun Yai in Chiang Mai, we waited an hour for it and it was absolutely worth the wait!

Khai Jiao.jpg

Khai Jiao

(Thai omelette) Super simple but these deep fried omelettes are delicious and addictive - just ask skippy! You can get them plain or stuffed with crab, pork, vegetables, whatever you want really!

Pad Krapow.jpg

Pad Krapow

Delicious stir fried chicken or pork with chili and Thai Basil. Served with rice and a fried (Or deep fried egg in this case). My go to hangover cure. This fancier version was at Err rustic Thai in Bangkok.

Sai Ua

Chiang Mai sausage. Another addictive dish. Sai Ua is spicy, fragrant and delicious. You can find it in most restaurants in Chiang Mai and it is also a very popular street food. Pairs perfectly with an ice cold Singha.
